Aperitivo

This is perhaps one of the best things that we don't have in the States.  

Aperitivo: bevanda alcolica o analcolica che si beve prima dei pasti per stuzzicare l'appetito
Aperitif: an alcoholic drink taken before a meal as an appetizer

Basically, many bars have an offering that when you buy a drink (sometimes it's the normal cost, other times they charge a bit more) you get to help yourself to a buffet of food.  Some places only have cold foods, like a pasta salad, bruschetta, an array of vegetables BUT the good places offer much, much more.  In theory one should not be making a dinner out of this, but you easily can.  For the price of 1 cocktail or beer you can help yourself to a large array of food, cheaper than most of the places you can go for dinner.  I think I can say that we've (some friends and I) become aperitivo connoisseurs, so here's some of our favorite places to go for an inexpensive "meal".

Package!

Well, I was super excited yesterday when my package from home finally arrived while I was actually there to receive it.  Inside was the yummy goodness of caramel creams and twizzlers, super fun Sally Hansen Salon Effects (one of which is Halloween themed and I can't wait to wear for the holiday), as well as some warmer winter clothes that I hadn't had space for in my suitcases. 

All in all, it made for a special day (esp. since it was freezing out yesterday so I immediately pulled a sweater out of the box to wear).

Sagra delle Castagne

Well, it's my favorite time of year in Italy - the high point of the sagra season.  Sagras, festivals which celebrate an item (normally food related) that's typical to that specific city, occur at all times of the year, however, I've noticed that they seem to be most varied (and more highly concentrated) during the Fall.  There are sagras for just about everything.  In Ladispoli they have the Sagra dei Carciofi (artichokes), Morlupo has the Sagra della Salsiccia (sausage), there's a Sagra d'ogni cosa fritta (everything that's fried), polenta, wine and beans.  

So today, I went to the Sagra delle Castagne (or chestnut festival) in the town of Marradi with my friend Lisa.  There were chestnuts prepared in just about every way you can think of: chestnut grappa, roasted chestnuts, marron glaces, chestnut flour, chestnut cakes and pies, fried marrons, marron tortellinis, and even puddings.  Needless to say, it was yummy.  They also had glasses of novello wine for 1 euro EVERYWHERE and artisan salamis and other cured meats as well as cheeses.

Apartment Woes

Well, as gorgeous (and as glamorous) as it sounds to live in a 17th century Italian palazzo, yesterday, my ongoing woes with debris falling from the ceiling culminated with an actual brick tile (in its entirety) falling from the ceiling and creating a hole large enough that I can now look into the apartment above.  

Luckily, I am fortunate to have landlords that are very responsive and they acted quickly and really worked with me to make sure it all gets resolved as quickly as possible.  I've self imposed a ban from my apartment today so that they can try to finish up all the work (aka the demo) they are doing upstairs.  Then the owners of the apartment above will take care of all the cleaning costs to get things back to how they should be.   

In the meantime though, I thought that you would all like to see some photos of the debris and hole and such.  What great first pictures to share of my apartment, I guess I really should have moved a little faster in taking some shots of the apartment (pre this situation) to share with you all.  Opps!

FINALLY...school begins!

Well, it's September 24 and I just had my first class of the semester (although it was written on all of the school calendars that classes started the 10th). My first class was Glottologia at the Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia at Università di Firenze.  What is glottologia you may ask? Well, I found out definitively myself today.  It's the study of indo-european languages most of which are dead: sanscrit and a bunch of others.  I haven't decided 100% if I'm definitely taking this course or not, I'm going to try it out for a couple more days, but at times I found the professor a bit difficult to follow (a lot of technical terms that I don't know in Italian).  Later today I have another course that I'm checking out, Contemporary History with Paul Ginsborg (some of you might know his name, his very famous in the Italian Studies world).  I'm more excited about the possibility of having him as a professor than I am of actually taking the course, so we'll see.  And the last course from which I will choose only 1 is General Linguistics.  But that class doesn't start until Wednesday so I have some time.  I'm most excited that I think I've got some new friends from this first class already and they are in their 3rd year and they study Ancient Literature!

So, like I said, I'll only be taking 1 class at Università di Firenze and then I'll be taking 4 classes at the Sede (Middlebury's "campus").  Right now I'm signed up for Didattica, Estetica, Letteratura, and Unione Europea.  But I may drop one of the courses so that I can do an independent study.  I was initially not going to do one but I'm a procrastinator and you need good self discipline for that, but I went to the meeting about it and there are so many check points and meetings along the way that I think I would do just fine.  We'll see, I need a great topic first.  Any way, the classes at the Sede start tomorrow on a provisional schedule so as you can see, things are going to pick up real quickly.

So, if classes didn't start until now, what have I been up to since Sept 1?  Well, a ton of stuff.  The school had various types of orientations that started on the 7th and continued (about 1 a day) until the 14th.  Then I decided, since I knew I had a week free, I'd go visit some friends.  I stayed with my friends Sandro and Ionela (the pastry guy!).  It was really great staying with them, it was very relaxing and since they are close to AUR I got to see all my friends and ex-coworkers from the school.  I went out to lunch with them one day and I did a little bit of networking to start letting them know that I'll have my masters in June.  I also got to meet up with my friend Sabrina.  We went out to dinner with her friends (it was a ladies night) at one of my favorite places to eat, Zio Severino, and this just goes to show how well she knows me - I didn't even mention the name but she remembered how much I like it so she surprised me.  I also got to see Tommaso, a friend of Sandro and Ionela's that loves to recite Italian epic poetry and have me tell him who the author is and what the title of the piece is.  Yikes, he had me embarrassed because I've forgotten a lot.  I'm going to be studying hard this year!

Other than that, I've been hanging out with my new Middlebury Masters friends.  We're a really small group so it's a really good thing that we all get along for the most part.  I'm still sans internet at home, which is starting to get really frustrating, but I'm making it work.

Also, for all of my GoT fans out there (Sarah)...I just saw the best t-shirt.  It has a direwolf and it says, "Adopt a Dire Wolf".  I want one!  Also, with all of this free time I've been able to do some reading again.  I finished book 1 of GoT and a Chuck Palahniuk book.  Now I'm on to Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Well, I can't imagine that I have anything else to say right now.  I think I've got it all in there, all the important things at least.  Oh, I remember, I am now taking reservations for people to come visit me!

FIRENZE!

Ciao tutti!

Scusatemi la lunga pausa.  Nei 10 giorni che sono stata a casa ho dovuto sistemare tante cose (e non sono riuscita a fare tutto) e vedere tante persone.  Ma adesso sto a firenze!!!!!!!!

Sono arrivata ieri e sono stata molto fortunata che tutto è andato bene con l'appartamento dove vivrò.  I proprietari sono molto simpatici - mi hanno già invitato a mangiare a casa loro e mi hanno fatto vedere la zona dove si trova l'appartamento e che cosa c'è intorno.  Comincio a stare là domani e vi faccio vedere le foto come mi sistemo.  Per oggi, sto a un Hilton Garden Inn che è molto bello e che ha materassi buonissimi!  E grazie ai miei punti di Hilton Honors pago quasi niente.

Ieri è stata una giornata bellissima ma oggi è nuvoloso e ogni tanto comincia a piovere.  Adesso devo cominciare tutto per prendere il permesso di soggiorno.  Probabilmente, come mi sposto al appartmento sarò senza internet fino a quando riesco a fare l'abbonamento.

Comunque, ora torno a godermi il caffe buono e questa giornata con niente da fare.

Festa in maschera!

Ieri sera abbiamo avuto una festa in maschera (o forse è più preciso da dire una festa in costume).  Mi sono vestita come il sette dei denari dalla mazza di carte napoletane.  E' stato molto bello a vedere tutti gli studenti e professori in costume.  E abbiamo ballato TANTO!  


Il vincitore della gara per i costumi è stato Matteo con il suo costume di "un ape in un'ape."

Resta solo una settimana e mezzo!  Che paura!  Nella prossima settimana ho due presentazioni orali (da 10/20 minuti) e una tesina (di 12 pagine) da consegnare.  E prima del 15 agosto ho due altre tesine da consegnare (sempre da 12 pagine ognuno).  C'è la faccio, ma non avrò tempo per fare tante altre cose.


Sabato scorso abbiamo fatto una a serata di karaoke italiano.  E' stato bellissima.  Ho pure cantanto io tre canzoni (non preoccuparvi, con altre persone)!  Agguingo qui sotto le canzone che abbiamo fatto (io e le amiche) se volete sentire qualche canzone italiana.

Questo sabato (domani) abbiamo una festa in maschera.  Ancora non ho una maschera ma mi inventirò qualcosa.  Hanno un Ben Franklin molto vicino la scuola che mi fa pensare a Damacus e quando ero piccola e andavamo al dottore e poi a Ben Franklin dopo. Che bei ricordi!

Terza settimana - siamo alla metà!

Ci sono tante cose da dire!  Questa settimana (oggi infatti) sono arrivati i registri italiani Paolo e Vittorio Taviani.  Hanno girato tanti famosi film e hanno vinti moltecipli premi.  Questo anno sono stati perfino nominati per un Golden Globe per il loro nuovo film "Cesare deve morire."  Allora, tutto questo ha creato tanti disturbi.  La lezione che ho alle 6 di sera sarà cancellato due volte ma avremmo una grande cena per celebrare la loro visita.  A questa cena faremmo anche un "flash mob" alla quale parteciparò.  


Nella settimana scorsa, sono andata con un paio di nuovi amici alle cascate che stanno qui vicino.  Erano belli ma essendo cascate, c'è uno stabilimento per la idro-electricità che oscura la vista.

Oggi sono stata pizzicata da una vespa.  Mama mia quanto faceva male!  Non riuscivo a camminare bene, per fortuna sono stata vicino alla mensa e non ho messo tanto per prendere un po di ghiaccio.  


Gli studi vanno bene.  Ho TANTISSIMI libri ed articoli da legere ma ce lo faccio.  Inoltre quello studio ho anche 3 tesine da scrivere (ognuno da almeno 10 pagine)!  Infatti forse è meglio se scappo adesso per leggere un po.


Stasera abbiamo avuto un'altra tempesta.  Era veramente forte e ho deciso di registrare un po di video dalla finestra di mia camera da letto.  Spero di poter caricarlo qua per farvi vedere.

Una settimana finita...5 da conquistare

E' finita la prima settimana a Middlebury e mi rimangono cinque.  Sono stata un po pigra nei primi giorni e adesso faccio fatica a recuperare con le letture.  Sto leggendo "L'Italia spiegata ai ragazzi" che è un libro scritto dal mio professore e scritto per i giovani (allora mi piace tanto perch'è molto facile), "Breve Corso di Semiotica", con la quale ho tanti problemmi perche non capisco niente, e finalmente "Storia linguistica dell'Italia unita" dalla quale ho gia letto pezzi all'AUR e nello spectro di difficoltà sta nel mezzo.

Leggo anche pezzi da un quarto libro per il corso che prendo come "audit" ma siccome no è obbligatorio non l'ho messo nella foto.


Dopo questo weekend "a casa" mi impegnerò di più a fare le foto del campus e dintorni.  Vermont è proprio un bel posto.  Ci sta un lago qui vicino (ancora non sono andata a vederlo), e il villagio di Middlebury è molto carino con tanti piccoli negozi.


Ora è quasi l'una e vado a letto.  Buonanotte tutti!

La gente, le lezioni, il caldo

La prima settimana è ormai finita e tanto è successo i questi giorni.  Ho conosciuto tante nuove persone. Ci sono più di 100 studenti nella Scuola Italiana (siamo in 9 che vanno a Firenze) e mi sembra di aver incontrato quasi tutti.  La gente qua è molto gentile e tutti sono pronti ad aiutare se ti serve una mano.


Per le lezioni, seguo Faces of Italy 1861-Present che è un corso sulla la storia dell'italia unità; Dialects of Italy che si concentra sul aspetto linguistico dei dialetti italiani; Semiotic Theory & Practice che è un corso completamente fuori dal mio campo ma è molto interessante.  Sto anche seguendo The Italian Diaspora come un "audit" perche posso solo iscrivermi a 3 corsi ma questo mi piace tantissimo è lo voglio anche studiare. 


Continua a fare un caldo opprimente ma per fortuna è arrivato il mio nuovo ventilatore che funziona come una bomba! Ieri sera ho dovuta anche mettermi la coperta - e viva!  Oggi mi sono iscritta alla squadra di pallavolo.  Voglio fare qualcosa sportiva e divertente e questo mi sembra lo sport giusto.  Quelli che giocano sulla squadra di calcio dicono che è MOLTO impegnativo (fanno allenamenti ogni giorno da lunedì a venerdì per 2 ore!) allora ho deciso di non scegliere il calcio.  


Domani vado per togliermi i punti (get my stitches taken out).  Sono un po preoccupata perche sarà fatta da un infermiera invece da un dottore.  Di sicuro le mie preoccupazioni sono inutile, ma che si può fare.


Allora vado a studiare perche ho tanto da leggere.  A presto!

La prima giornata

Ciao a tutti!  La fine del mio viaggio e' andata molto tranquilo - per fortuna!  


Questo e' la mia prima posta da Middlebury e la prima scritta tutta in italiano.  Dovete scusare gli errori che ormai e' tanto tempo che non scrivo in italiano.  Ho gia incontrato il direttore della Scuola Italiana (ha notato favorevole il mio italiano parlato!).  Stasera tutti gli studenti della mia scuola mangiaremmo insieme.  Sara' il primo tempo di incontrare la maggior parte dei miei colleghi e non vedo l'ora.  Fino ad ora ho passato tanto tempo in camera sistemando le mie cose e tentando di scapare dal caldo.


Qui sotto trovi le foto della mia camera.  Sono le 17:17 e ancora non ho una compagna di stanza vediamo se ci sto sola o no.  La camera si trova al terzo piano e alla fine del corridoio dove ci stanno sedie e divani con alcune tavole.

Il palazzo dove ci sono i dorm e' molto carino con una stanza comune al primo piano.  Nella stanza c'e' un televisore, libri e altre cose da fare.

6.5 Hours of Driving, Whew!

After a fantastic evening/night yesterday with just about all of my siblings (Frank, Zoe, Stan and Ken) I spent the morning being lazy and slowly finished my packing.  Remember that procrastination thing I was mentioning, I didn't leave the house until about 4:30 this afternoon at which point I still had last minute stops to make before officially hitting the road.  Needless to say, I was able to get on the road at just about the perfect time (around 5:30) so that I hit only minimal traffic on my route.  I just finished driving 6.5 hours, it's now after midnight and I've checked into a hotel (Hilton of course, have to earn those points!) in Clifton Park, NY.  For those of you that are as unfamiliar with NY state geography as I am, that's just outside of Schenectedy and according to my cell phone that leaves me about 2 hours and some change from Middlebury.  


I had a nice smooth ride.  I think there was only one "Mia singing and dancing like a crazy person while driving incident" (it's not my fault they played Kimbra's Warrior with Carly Rae right after it).  And so far, driving through NY has been the best segment of the journey since I got out of MD and off of Route 15.  Probably because it was pretty late by the time I got into the state so I had fairly empty roads.


Fifi needs a serious car wash but other than that, she's been great to drive.  All of her perks (integrated handsfree bluetooth, Sirius, USB aux jack, low gas mileage, etc, etc, etc) have really helped with that.  Well, I had best get to bed (and reading Game of Thrones if I want any chance of finishing the book before I'm not allowed to read anymore of it).

Successful Procrastination

Well, it's June 30th and I'm in my last 3 days of speaking English for the next 6 weeks so I figured I better get this thing started (don't worry, I'll be sure to write in Italian as well!).  


I'm just beginning to furiously pack my things.  Here's to hoping that I can make it all fit in 2 suitcases (they'll just have to be huge).  And for those of you that really know me, you know how well I'm procrastinating at this packing thing, like starting my blog before starting to pack.


At this point I'm STILL undecided about whether I drive or fly to Vermont, looks like I might be driving.  At least if I drive Fifi and I will get some real quality time and that will be the longest road trip we've taken.  While driving 9+ hours by myself doesn't sound too enticing, it will offer me the opportunity to stop and visit family and friends along the way.  


Well, I better actually get to packing.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and a fantastic 4th of July!
